back in the running shoes

It’s no secret that I have fallen off the exercise wagon this summer. My body has seen hardly any heart-pumping action since, oh, my 1/2 marathon in early June. It’s terrible, really.

I knew I needed something to kick my ass into gear. I know that many people are suffering from the same woes. My partner-in-crime and I made the decision to organize a big, virtual race, complete with sponsors, t-shirts, swag, and medals! Because, really. Who doesn’t love a little race bling and swag? Oh. And exercise?

I have registered for the 5K run, which for me is really no big deal, I do did that distance all the time. This time around, however, I am contemplating starting {and finishing} the couch-to-5K program. I can run for little bursts at a time, but nothing to brag about. It’s been so long, hell, maybe I can’t even do that anymore. I don’t really like running or care if I am ever fast and furious, but I tend to do better when I have a plan and a bit of structure. This may be the perfect time for me to actually follow through on this program. Who’s with me?? Friends make it soooo much better.

Now, about the race:

On Saturday, October 22nd,

we’ll all run our own race,

in our own place,

at our own pace!

It’s time to lace up your shoes and get ready for the Sisterhood of the Shrinking Jeans 3rd Annual Virtual 5K/10K – Run the ‘Hood!

Register for Run the 'Hood 2011 Virtual 5K/10K in Worldwide! on Eventbrite

Are you scratching your head and wondering what a Virtual 5K/10K is?

Run the ‘Hood is our 3rd annual virtual race at the Sisterhood of the Shrinking Jeans. We have an amazing online community of women and men, and because we can’t all get together for the same race, in the same city, we race together -virtually.In 2009 and earlier this year, we trained and ran an awesome 5K virtually all over the country – with all of our Sisters (and Brothers!).We’re upping the ante in 2011 and adding a 10K and 1 mile kids fun run, so runners of all ages and ability can join in. AND, this year, in order to make our Virtual 5k/10K feel even more like a real race, we have race t-shirts! Everyone LOVES a race t-shirt, right? And medals? Yep, we’ve got those, too.

Run The 'Hood T-shirt

Who can register for the race?

ANYONE. If you’re reading this, you’re welcome to join our race. You can also invite your mother, your brother, your neighbor, your cranky co-worker, your grandma, your kids, even your grandkids. This race is for people of every age and ability – even if you think you could never complete a 5K, trust me YOU can.

Maybe you don’t have a 5K near you? Maybe you are scared to sign up for a race? Well, a virtual race is EXACTLY what you need!! You build your own race course, train for your race, and join all of your Sisters and Brothers virtually on race day!
Not a runner? That’s okay! You can register to walk the 5K or 10K!

Dear Self…

Dear Melissa,

You have come so far this past year. 2010 was YOUR year. You finally realized that exercise and healthy eating DO pay off if you are consistent and stick with it. After all those years of constantly stressing over and battling your weight, you lost 50+ pounds and are looking damn fine. Just take it one day at a time, girl.

You took huge leaps in fitness. Can you believe that you helped organize a team of fantastic people from all over the country who raised over $50,000 for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and you finished the San Diego Rock n’ Roll 1/2 marathon under your personal goal of 3 hours? You finally got over your fears at the gym and started taking the fitness classes you have always longed to participate in. You continued to push yourself and found that you actually enjoy seeing what your body is capable of.

You made changes in your daily eating habits, small at first, but these small changes produce bigger rewards. You are are consuming foods that are more organic, more healthy, and I am so proud of you for cooking more. You are eating healthier, and therefore, so are your children.

You accepted that you are truly a blonde at heart and got rid of your dark, moody hair.

Your love of adventure shined through during 2010. You traveled to both sides of the country and many more places in between. You were finally able to meet some of the people who have become your close friends in the years past and were excited to bring even more new friends into your life. You visited old friends that have always had a special place in your heart and wondered why it took you so long to see each other and vowed to reconnect more often.

You celebrated 10 years of marriage with your kick-ass husband. While that decade had it’s share of ups and downs, you and Justin decided to make each other priorities in your lives again. It’s so awesome to see you laugh with each other again, rather than fighting. That anniversary trip you took to New Zealand (or Italy, Norway, or the other million places you long to visit) was the most wonderful trip EVER. It was just what you both needed to relax, refresh, and refocus.

So many doors have opened for you this past year. Who would have ever thought? Writing, traveling, and raising awareness on issues that you believe in have started to play such an important role in your life. You continued to pursue your love of photography and improved your skills so much. You pretty much rock.

The world is yours. I am so glad you are finally starting to realize it.

Much love and happiness,

Melissa

P.S. Can you believe you and the family finally made the move? It was a lot of work, but you are all so happy and it was totally worth it.

Because you might be needing us after the holidays…

The beautiful and talented, Christy, posted this on Shrinking Jeans today and I love it so much! Plus, I’m too busy to be original right now.

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the ‘hood
All our members were scrambling, for recipes which were good.
Along the chimney stockings were hung all about,
With hopes that St Nicholas would fill them with EA SPORTS Active More Workouts.

The Sisters (and brothers) were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of flat stomachs danced in their heads.
And Christy in her knee socks, and Melissa in her rocking headband,
Had just settled down with their laptops to brainstorm and plan.

When out on there on Twitter arose a such a chatter,
They sprang from their chat to see what was the matter.
Away to through the windows they clicked and they scrolled,
Everyones 140 characters, a story they told.

A new Shrinking challenge soon would be starting,
With inches and pounds members would gladly be parting.
Everyone was eager and for details they yelped,
But we hadn’t quite nailed it, and needed some help.

With Christie O. in our mind, so blonde and so tan,
We knew in a moment she would help us hatch a plan.
Our challenge must be fabulous, not boring or lame,
And she whistled, and shouted, and called us name!

“Now April! Now, Heather! Now, Lisa and Thea!
On, Brian! On, Christy! On, Donya and Melissa!
Put your thinking caps on and get ready to write!
Our Sisters (and Brothers) need us to help them look out of site.”

As we planned and the challenge started to take shape,
We new this was going to be the best on to date.
So we said that’s a wrap and and squealed with delight,
Shut down our laptops and called it a night .

Next Wednesday morning the revolution will begin,
All of our Sisters (and Brothers) will step on and grin.
Knowing they’ll be bidding a final farewell,
To that blasted number they see on their scales.

If you’re new to the Sisterhood, or just stopping in,
Won’t you stick around and vow with us to get thin?
You will always find support and encouragement on this site,
You should think of your friends too, and send them an invite!

So until then, dear members, just know in your heart,
We’ll help you figure out just where you should start.
These next days will be hard, but try with all your mite,
Happy Shrinking to all, and to all a good-night!

All of us at the Sisterhood of the Shrinking Jeans would like to wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas!

***Don’t forget to check in tomorrow! We’ll be giving away the mother lode of Weight Watchers goodies, including a 3-month membership!***

I Ran So Far Away…

In 2007,
I ran/walked a 1/2 marathon in Steamboat Springs.
I trained with Team in Training.
I raised $2700 for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Cancer sucks.
Let’s kick it’s ass.
I am doing it again.
This time in San Diego.
My friends and I have formed a team.
Help us help others.
I have committed to raise even more money.
I will also beat my 1/2 marathon personal record.
Your donation?
Appreciated more than you will ever know.

One Year Ago!

Photobucket

Today, we celebrate the One-Year Anniversary of The Sisterhood of the Shrinking Jeans! I can’t believe how much it has grown over the last year! I have met the most inspirational, fun people through this venture. I have been able to participate in campaigns focused on giving back, which is ultimately so important to me. I have lost 15 pounds. I have tried new workouts. I have gained so, SO many new friends.

I can’t even begin to think what Year Two may have in store. The possibilities are endless. We want to continue to focus on getting fit and healthy, as well as giving back! We are mulling the possibility of creating a Shrinking Jeans Virtual Team In Training group. What better way to travel, hang out with friends, be fit, AND raise money for a wonderful organization? Want to join us?
