toothpaste {conversation}

IMG_0702

This mornings shower-brushteeth-getdressed-combhair routine consisted of Ashton bitching to me about Bridger’s lack of toothpaste etiquette {it was bridger’s turn in the shower}. He makes a horrible mess, leaving toothpaste all around the tube and stringing to whatever happens to be near it {usually my brush or straightening iron}.

Bridger steps out of the shower and immediately Ashton starts in on him about the toothpaste.

Ash: You REALLY need to start cleaning up your own toothpaste mess. I have to do it EVERY DAY.

BB: You are acting like you are SO much older than me.

Ash: I am. Twelve minutes. I’ve seen more life than you. I am 12 minutes smarter than you, too.

Those are fightin’ words. Don’t ever question their smartness. I can still here them, upstairs, arguing and asking each other questions of square roots, scorpions, money, and science and screaming, “HAH! SEE?! I AM SMARTER THAN YOU!”

Things have been rather bumpy lately. {i feel like i say that a lot?} Frustration runs deep, and I am feeling the stress of having my husband home for a total of 4 days in five weeks. Some days it takes everything in me to parent, and I will admit sometimes I just fail. Things could be worse, but they could also be ohsomuchbetter. I need to work on that.

I haven’t been training for my 1/2 marathon like I envisioned. I use the shitty weather as an excuse. A lot. Yesterday was perfect. I asked the twins if they wanted to go for a walk, and they excitedly agreed. I have committed to paying $1.00 for every mile that our completes until our charity: water campaign ends on June 18th.

right now we have raised $878!!

We set out with the intent for a leisurely stroll… BB said he would go to Beau’s house {which is about 1/2 mile away}, Ashton wanted to do “the loop” with me {2.78 miles}. Well, we ended up doing a whole 5K {3.1 miles}! And there was barely any whining, which is a miracle in itself!

I left the boys home and set out for another 5K for myself.

Shortly before 8, Ash asked if I wanted to go walk/run a little bit more. How could I resist that?? We ended up doing a few more miles!

I am so proud of these little guys. I would have never even CONSIDERED doing two miles when I was their age!

Totals:

  • Mom: 8.42 miles
  • Ashton: 6.02 miles
  • Bridger: 3.1 miles

Another $17.54 in the bank for our fundraising! Woot!

This photo? Priceless. The sun felt amazing. {check out the Garmin on his arm, he has totally overtaken it }

Backseat Conversations

tussling

It’s been awhile since my last backseat conversations post!

BB:  Did they have Spongebob when you were born?
Me:  No. We had The Smurfs and cartoons like that.
BB:  Back in the olden days, Spongebob had no color.
Me:  I am pretty sure Spongebob has always been in color. What do you consider the “olden days”?
BB:  Like in 2000.
(oh, man)

The twins then took to discussing their future careers.

Bridger has decided on three main professions:
1. He will work for NASA.
2. A scientist.
3. A reptile expert.

Ashton has narrowed it down to four careers:
1. A doctor.
2. A golfer.
3. A photographer.
4. A money scientist.

They are a lot more creative than I was at that age!

Googled.

The twins are both very intense when it comes to their interests, almost-OCD-ish. With Ashton, it’s anything with numbers, counting, or math. Remember the pop tabs? The kid will count things over and over and over. Two weeks ago, he started drawing plus signs on paper and counting them.  We’re not just talking a hundred here, a hundred there. I think at last count, he was approaching 20,000. TWENTY THOUSAND. He divides the papers up and counts a few hundred at a time.

plusses

Now, Bridger… That boy likes to study. He proclaims that he is a scientist of everything. Once he decides on which subjects are currently his focus, watch out. He has obsessed over pandas, firemen, and transformers. His current obsessions are space, reptiles, and the human body. Yes, the human body. He’s six. You can imagine that this has led to some interesting conversations. Bridger doesn’t just read the occasional book about his subject, he literally spends every waking moment thinking, drawing, or reading about it.

science

Enter the computer. After supper last night, Ashton asked if he could play Wii Fit and Bridger asked to go on the computer. Typically, he goes to NASA sites or National Geographic and I’ve never had any reason to question it. Last night, however, he came downstairs a bit later and laid down on me. I asked him what he learned about. Silence. I asked again. Bury head. My continued questioning was met by more silence and almost-tears. That is never good.

I marched upstairs and opened up the history to see what he had been up to. Deja Vu?

My sweet little cuddly mama’s-boy googled: picture of feces. Yes, he typed in PICTURE OF FECES. And then he visited a website called, “The Scoop on Poop.” He was just devastated over my discovery of his poop search. Devastated.

What else did my 6-year-old google?

*best pictures of digestive system
*best pictures of digestive system in real color  (Because who wants to see photos of the digestive system in FAKE color?)
*best pictures of stomach (Obviously, he is quite choosy in his google searches. Only the best.)
*what does it look like in komodo dragon digestive system? (Seriously. Like you weren’t wondering the same thing?)
*picture of all body parts in one frame
*picture of all systems in one picture
*science of your body
*what is the difference between digest and indigest

Is it bad that I am actually quite impressed that he typed all these words out and his spelling was impeccable?

Take Down

I kind of feel like I am just barely treading water these days! Sheesh! I just can’t seem to get completely on top of ANYTHING!

The twins have started a 2-week wrestling program, a first for them. BB has been dying to be in wrestling since last spring (we missed the deadline!) and Ash had no interest in wrestling, other than the normal “matches” that occur at home between to 6-year-old boys! Since it was only $10, I told him he should give it a try and if he didn’t like it, he could quit. Turns out they both love it. Me? Not so much.

They had their first death match tournament Friday evening, and it was complete mayhem after weigh-in. Kids turned loose on the mats, dropping, pushing, attacking… it was scary to watch! Bridger had a bloody lip that we had to clean up before the actual tournament even began! I was so relieved when the coaches finally started the tournament and put order to the utter chaos.

Of course, my camera battery was dead, so I took the video camera. Turns out, that battery was dead, too. So here is the horrible video shot on my Blackberry, courtesy of Averie…. (she skips in between the two guys. BB is in the first match, in the red shorts, and Ash is the second match w/white shirt, gray shorts)

Oddly enough, they both want to attend the tournament this weekend, too. I just have to mentally prepare myself first.

Backseat Conversations…

BB: When I grow up, can I go into space?
Me: Of course!
BB: Will you come into space with me?
Me: Sure!
Kane: Have fun clearing that with NASA.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ash:  BB and I will always live together.
BB:  Silence.
Ash: Right, Bridger? You and I will always live together?
BB: Silence.
Me: What about when you have kids?
Ash: I will have two people to help take care of them.
Me: Who?
Ash: My wife and Bridger. We’ll have two wives.
He also wants to have two kids, preferably twins, and live next to his mommy. ;p
First things first, remember this? I promised to give a $50 gift card to either Target.com or Amazon.com to one lucky person who donated to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society on my behalf through my Team in Training page! Those of you who didn’t donate, go now, please? you still can. Just sayin’.
The winner is Brooke!! Thank you to ALL who have donated thus far. I am keeping a running list of these awesome people on the sidebar, so check it out.
**Justin has given me his blessing to attend FitBloggin in Baltimore the weekend of March 19th. Now, I just need the price of plane tickets to fall, a sponsor, or a small miracle. ;) Anyone have good tips on finding airfare deals?
**The twins started winter soccer in the dome a few weeks ago. We actually went at the wrong time the first day, so they played with the U8 (2nd graders) players. They chose to stay with the older kids for the duration of soccer instead of going to the easier level with kids their own age! They are small, but they love it.
**Bridger received more mail from NASA! He was beyond excited!
**Justin’s rig is slated to move to a new location, so he was able to come home and work from home for a few days. This is the first time he’s been home in a month! We are having a lazy Sunday and planning on watching some football! Go Colts! I’m even more excited because this means the Christmas tree will finally be put away. I didn’t know how to unhook all the lights and crap, and only discovered that I didn’t know this when I started taking it apart. It has been laying in my formal living room on the ground since. Ugh.
A backseat conversation from today:
Ash (to BB):  What is 200 divided by 5?
BB:  Can we do this later? I’m just not really into math right now.
